Singapore & Shanghai Symphony Orchestras to launch artistic partnership in 2026

Thursday, February 12th, 2026

In an inspiring celebration of cultural collaboration, two of Asia’s most prestigious orchestras have joined forces in a landmark artistic partnership for 2026. The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra are each taking the stage in the other’s city this year, marking a powerful new chapter in musical exchange between Shanghai and Singapore.

The announcement was made during the 6th Singapore Shanghai Comprehensive Cooperation Council meeting, where SSG Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Kwok and Shanghai Symphony President Fedina Zhou signed the agreement to deepen cultural ties through music. What was once a forward looking vision is now unfolding as one of the most anticipated cultural highlights of the year.

A Tale of Two Cities, Two Concerts

On 23 March 2026, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra makes its long awaited debut in Singapore at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Founded in 1879 and recognised as Asia’s oldest orchestra, it stands as a cultural beacon in the region. Under the baton of its acclaimed Music Director Long Yu, the orchestra presents a programme that bridges East and West.

Audiences are experiencing a stirring performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, works renowned for their emotional depth and sweeping grandeur. Adding contemporary Chinese character to the evening are selections from Elliot Leung’s Chinese Kitchen: A Feast of Flavours, a vibrant suite inspired by culinary traditions. Pianist Serena Wang joins the orchestra for this memorable Singapore debut.

In return, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra returns to Shanghai on 13 October 2026, marking its first performance there in nearly two decades. The concert takes place at the Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall and is conducted by Music Director Hannu Lintu. Rising Singaporean violinist Chloe Chua features as soloist, highlighting the depth of emerging talent from Singapore.

The Shanghai concert forms part of a broader China tour for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, building on the momentum of its recent successful visits to Australia and Japan. Together, these performances underscore the orchestra’s growing international presence and reputation.

Strengthening Cultural Ties Through Music

Beyond the prestige of two distinguished ensembles sharing stages, this exchange represents something more profound. It reflects an active dialogue between two global cities that value both heritage and innovation. Music, with its ability to transcend language and borders, serves as a bridge for deeper understanding and mutual respect.

By presenting programmes that combine Western masterworks with contemporary Asian compositions, both orchestras demonstrate how tradition and modern creativity coexist harmoniously. The 2026 artistic partnership is not only a celebration of excellence but also a statement of shared cultural ambition.

Celebrate Music with the SG Culture Pass

For audiences in Singapore, the excitement continues. Many Singapore Symphony Orchestra performances can be redeemed with the SG Culture Pass, making world class music more accessible to the public.

Highlights include Hannu Lintu’s first concert as Music Director designate on 14 and 15 November, SG60: Stephen Hough Piano Concerto plus Organ Symphony on 7 November, SG60: Hans Graf and Churen Li on 19 December, the SNYO 45th Anniversary Gala on 6 December, and the Temasek Foundation times Singapore Symphony Orchestra Christmas Concert on 12 and 13 December.

As 2026 unfolds, this extraordinary partnership stands as a testament to the power of cultural exchange. In bringing together two orchestras with rich histories and bold visions, Shanghai and Singapore are not simply presenting concerts. They are shaping a shared cultural future, one performance at a time.
