West Eastern Divan Orchestra

In 2011 the KT Wong Foundation was the sole foundation partner supporting renowned conductor Sir Daniel Barenboim and his West Eastern Divan Orchestra’s first tour of China. Barenboim and the late Edward Said created this trailblazing orchestra of young musicians from widely divergent beliefs with the express goal to bridge cultures and promote dialogue between them through music.

This echoes the Foundation’s goal to create meaningful cross-cultural collaborations in the arts. The China performances celebrated Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Symphonies and were performed at some of China’s most spectacular venues, beginning with Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall.

The orchestra moved on to Shanghai, where it featured at the Music in the Summer Air Festival at Shanghai’s Culture Square.

The West Eastern Divan Orchestra’s tour of China will feature in a forthcoming documentary, produced by the KT Wong Foundation.
