THE HERDS: A Journey of Public Art and Climate Action Across Continents

Sunday, July 27th, 2025

From April to August 2025, an extraordinary spectacle will unfold across two continents. THE HERDS is not just a public art project — it is a sweeping act of climate storytelling, uniting cultures, disciplines and communities in response to one of the greatest challenges of our time.

At the heart of the project are life-size puppet animals undertaking a symbolic 20,000km journey from the Congo Basin to the Arctic Circle, retracing the path of a world altered by climate change. As these majestic creatures make their way north through cities, landscapes and communities, they carry with them a vital message: that the climate crisis is here, it is urgent, and it affects us all.

Culture Meets Climate

THE HERDS represents a collaboration on an unprecedented scale. Conceived and produced by The Walk Productions, known for the globally acclaimed journey of Little Amal, this project brings together leading artists, environmentalists and organisations across Africa and Europe to confront the global climate emergency through the power of storytelling, art and participation.

The route spans iconic cities and vulnerable regions alike — from Kinshasa, Lagos and Marrakesh to Paris, Venice, Manchester and Copenhagen, culminating in a final event in the Arctic Circle. Each stop along the way is more than a performance — it is a civic encounter, a moment of reflection and a call to action, where local voices and stories are honoured.

A Powerful Creative Team

Led by Artistic Director Amir Nizar Zuabi, THE HERDS is shaped by a team of internationally renowned creatives, including puppetry directors Craig LeoSiphokazi MpofuLuyanda Nogodlwana, and Sipho Ngxola. The project is produced by David LanTracey Seaward and Sarah Loader, whose combined experience spans theatre, film and large-scale participatory events.

Their approach is rooted in artistic excellence and deep collaboration. Working with local artists, educators, environmental experts and communities, THE HERDS will create performances, workshops and public installations that explore the relationship between people, animals, ecosystems and the urgent need for environmental justice.

A Living, Moving Monument to Change

As the puppet animals move through streets and squares, mountains and coastlines, they serve as more than visual spectacle. They become emblems of migration, resilience and loss. They provoke questions. They spark conversations. They invite us to imagine a different relationship with nature — one of respect, protection and co-existence.

THE HERDS is not just about raising awareness. It is about catalysing real, measurable change through dialogue, education and visibility. It is a creative act of resistance against apathy and inaction.

Be Part of the Journey

Whether you experience THE HERDS in your own city or follow the journey online, this is a project for everyone — artists, activists, families, and future generations. Through performance, movement and shared storytelling, THE HERDS offers a hopeful yet urgent call: to listen, to act, and to protect the Earth we share.
