Star pianist Lang Lang will join Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra at the Philharmonie Berlin on Tuesday 17 November, for a concert featuring works by Wagner, Mendelssohn and Schumann.
Marking the orchestra’s second appearance at the Philharmonie Berlin during the festival, the evening reunites Barenboim and the ensemble with an old friend. Lang Lang will take centre stage for Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25, a work combining sparkling virtuosity with lyrical expression.
The programme will open with Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, whose intimate character offers a gentle introduction to an evening spanning three distinctive voices of the Romantic era.
Following the Mendelssohn concerto, Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 97, known as the Rhenish, will conclude the concert. Its expansive orchestral writing and contrasting moods provide a rich counterpart to the opening work and the brilliance of the piano concerto.
With Barenboim, Lang Lang and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra sharing the stage, the concert promises to be a memorable occasion for audiences at one of Berlin’s landmark cultural venues.
