The Beijing Music Festival has unveiled the programme for its 29th edition, which will take place across the Chinese capital from 9 to 20 October 2026. Nearly 700 artists from 32 countries, including nine orchestras and ensembles, will participate in 12 performances spanning opera, symphonic music, chamber music and cross-genre collaborations. The programme was introduced at a press conference attended by representatives from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, alongside Festival Founder and Artistic Committee Chair Long Yu and Artistic Director Shuang Zou.
Presented under the theme “Beijing Cappella”, this year’s festival places Mozart at the centre of its artistic programme, marking the 270th anniversary of his birth. The “Mozart for Everyone” strand will explore his music through opera, piano concertos, all five violin concertos, chamber works and orchestral performances.
The opening concert will feature conductor Charles Dutoit, pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja and the Beijing Music Festival Orchestra in an all-Mozart programme. Opera audiences can look forward to a new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the China National Opera House on 10 and 11 October, followed by a semi-staged performance of Handel’s Giulio Cesare at the Poly Theatre on 18 October.
The programme also reaches beyond the classical repertoire. Sitar player Anoushka Shankar will perform at the Poly Theatre on 14 October, while the closing concert on 20 October will bring rock and symphonic music together under the theme “Classical Rock”.
Alongside the main performances, the festival will host public activities including open opera rehearsals, family backstage experiences, masterclasses and music appreciation sessions. Pop-up events and performances in public spaces will extend the festival’s presence across Beijing, creating opportunities for audiences to encounter music beyond the concert hall.
