Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam presents Hlanganani (“Bring Together”), a new solo exhibition by South African visual activist Zanele Muholi, opening on 12 September 2026. Presented in collaboration with the Muholi Art Institute, the exhibition brings together photography and painting, marking twenty years since Muholi began the portrait series Faces and Phases.
The exhibition opens with self-portraits from Somnyama Ngonyama (“Hail the Dark Lioness”, 2012–ongoing). Created largely during travels for exhibitions and residencies, these works transform materials close at hand, including hotel bedding, curtains and everyday objects, into striking compositions.
Alongside new self-portraits and paintings, Hlanganani features a presentation of Faces and Phases, including new portraits created with members of Amsterdam’s Black queer community. These works connect the series’ twenty-year history with the people and experiences of the city hosting the exhibition.
The official opening takes place on Saturday 12 September, from 3 pm to 6 pm, at Galerie Ron Mandos, Prinsengracht 282, Amsterdam. The exhibition remains on view until 1 November 2026.
